Hydrotherapy Pools & Disability Swimming

Swimming is brilliant exercise, something the whole family can do together, and it’s great for kids with mobility issues. A few useful things to know before you go:

  • Many swimming pools and leisure centres now do special swim sessions for the disabled and tend to make them extra fun with soft play, squirty things and other inflatable toys.
  • Either you or a carer should be able to get a reduced or free adult ticket if taking a disabled child swimming. The ID required varies from pool to pool, however you should be able to use your local authority carers card. Alternatively use your Blue Badge or a DLA letter as ID.
  • If your child has complex needs or a serious medical condition, you may be able to go to family swim sessions at Hospice hydro therapy pools.
  • According to The Equalities Act 2010, it a legal requirement for clubs and leisure facilities to make ‘reasonable’ adjustments to include disabled swimmers. It’s worth making the management aware of any particular needs before getting in the pool, just in case they want to make extra life guard provision.
  • You can find links to specialist swimwear on our shopping section.
