Top Tips...
- An NHS physiotherapist, occupational therapist, paediatrician or orthopaedic surgeon will give you specific advice about your child's mobility needs.
- There are eligibility criteria that the wheelchair services have to follow – these will help them decide the type of kit your child needs.
- Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions when you’re investigating the best kit for your child – it can be helpful to get the information written down for you so you can refer back to it.
- Most NHS wheelchair services have specialists in children's mobility. They can help with any necessary modifications to your child’s kit
- Make sure your regular reviews are organised well ahead of needing new kit. Everything takes time.
- If all else fails and you need the NHS to do better, then there is a formal complaints procedure. Call your local NHS Board and ask to speak to their complaints officer.
- No one should have to spend their own money buying a wheelchair for their child. Sometimes however it’s incredibly useful to have a powered chair, a sports wheelchair or a lightweight chair for getting out and about. You can get grants to help pay for this.
- Don’t forget…you shouldn’t pay VAT on equipment and vehicles for disabled people.
