Disabled facilities grant and so much more

If you need to adapt your home in any way to meet your child’s needs, you can get help to do it. Your local authority is the first place to go, and if they say no, you can appeal, or apply for one of the many grants that are available.

Be imaginative in thinking about how you could make your home a better place for your child. What would they love? How about a sensory room? You might be able to get funding for things like this from a charity.

A few tips and things to consider

  • No matter how you modify your house to meet your children's needs, your council tax should not go up.
  • The local authority can make an assessment of your home and suggest the right changes for your child.
  • Check out your local authority’s disabled facilities grants.
  • Some local councils offer low cost loans or grants to help renovate, repair or adapt your home. Contact your local Environmental Health or Housing Department for more info.
  • You may be able to get help with arranging for adaptation work to be carried out from a Home Improvement Agency – they are not-for-profit organisations:

England
Scotland
Wales

  • Some charities will help you buy things like a new washing machine, or do work to make your garden more accessible, or give a room a make over. Have a look at our grants page and you’ll find lots of options.
